In 2010, voters in Oklahoma will decide if the state constitution will be amended to make English the official language of the state. This comes after the Oklahoma House passed House Joint Resolution 1042 in an 89 - 8 vote.
The constitutional amendment "requires all official actions of the state to be conducted in English." It does however allow for exceptions such as: to teach other languages, promote trade and tourism, and promote relations with Native American tribes-- to name a few.
If voters approve the amendment in 2010, Oklahoma would become the 31st state to approve a similar measure.
